HOW TO HAVE A GARDEN THAT BLOOMS ALL YEAR!

Have you ever wondered why some gardens bloom year-round, filled with beautiful colors and bountiful blossoms? Believe it or not, you too can create this spectacular garden to enjoy. The key is to use a combination of flowers with varying bloom times. This can be achieved in two steps.

First, use either perennials or annuals or a combination of both. Having these two types of plants in your garden will allow you to have flowers every season. Although, perennial plants will take longer to bloom because they grow over an extended period and have a longer life span. Annual plants will bloom much faster and have a shorter life span. But just using these two classes of plants alone, or a combination of the two, won’t by itself create the desired effect. Knowing the bloom time of plants is most important, regardless of their life span.

Since both annuals and perennials can bloom during various seasons, understanding when the plants bloom is the second step to achieve a year-round bloom. Purchasing plants with staggering bloom times and then arranging them so that their blossoms overlap will create the desired look. For instance, if you plant flowers that bloom from Spring to Summer with other flowers that bloom from Summer to Fall or Fall to Winter, you can create a garden with continuous blooms. Playing with different types of plants and varying bloom times increases the likelihood that you’ll have at least one or multiple plants blooming at all times. When done correctly, your garden will be full of beautiful blossoms year-round.
