Whether you love yard work or hate it, it has to be done unless you hire someone. We know it can be tedious and often strenuous, but it is a part of gardening and landscaping. Maintaining a beautiful yard requires work. And believe it or not, we actually enjoy it. Here’s why.
Maintaining your own yard allows you to see what condition your yard is in and perform any necessary maintenance or fertilization. Yard work is another opportunity to get additional exercise. Even though I regularly engage in traditional exercise, yard work provides another way to burn a good amount of calories.
I monitor my activity during yard work, which allows me to see that even small tasks or short-timed tasks burn quite a few calories. Check out the two activity summaries below.

Activity 1
This picture shows calories burned after picking weeds and cleaning out gardening beds for an hour.
Activity 2
This picture shows spreading fertilizer and other yard maintenance for an hour and a half.
Certainly, you don’t have to spend an hour working in the yard. You can decide how much time you have for outdoor projects. But, if you’ve been looking for a way to get moving or just want to burn some additional calories, yard work will do it.
As a fun challenge, we want to see who can burn the most calories completing a gardening task in 30 minutes. Enter to win by using your wearable technology to monitor your activity during yard work. Post your results from the device on Instagram and tag us at @gardeninglife365, showing you performing the task and how many calories you burned in thirty minutes. We’ll announce the winner on Instagram and our blog on Sunday, September 11th. You’ll be amazed at your results! 🧑🌾 🪴🤸♀️ Let’s get moving❣️
