Now that winter is in full swing, we are moving inside for a few weeks. Before we do, though, we want to share a quick tip we forgot to mention in our final fall clean-up post. During the winter months, it’s important to ensure perennial plants are protected since cold temperatures, wind, freezing rain, and snow can damage plants. To protect your tender, sensitive plants, add a layer of mulch about six to eight inches thick around the base of plants. You can also use soil, wood chips, or straw if mulch is unavailable or not preferred.
It’s also a good idea to wrap trees and shrubs to avoid damage from frost, wind, and other elements. Using burlap or a garden fabric that is lightweight and breathable is recommended to protect plants during cold spells and extreme weather. Don’t forget to remove coverings when severe conditions pass.

Moving forward, over the next few weeks, we will discuss why you should have indoor plants, how they add to your home decor, and will offer a few indoor plant ideas with care tips. Also, our upcoming posts will include some ideas to help you stay busy through the winter months. We know this will be of particular interest to those who can’t get outside because of the weather. Since our climate allows us to remain outside throughout the season, we will continue to complete our outdoor projects and post new content and videos later.
