WHY SELF CARE IS IMPORTANT DURING GARDENING

While gardening may seem like a light activity, our post, Why Gardening Isn’t Just for Older People, explains it varies based on the level and type of activity. Some projects may require a lot of effort. Others may require that you work for an extended period. If not careful, you might neglect yourself while tending to your garden.

Because self-care is essential, we offer a few tips below to help you take care of yourself while working on gardening projects. As a side note, we are not medical professionals at GL365. So we highly encourage you to use your best judgment and consult with your physician before taking any of our recommendations.

1.  No matter where you live, you can be exposed to the damaging effects of the sun, like sunburn and other skin irritations.  Skin damage from the sun is a real risk, particularly during warmer seasons but really at any time, even on overcast days.  Using sunscreen, if appropriate for your skin, helps protect you from extended sun exposure.

2.  Staying hydrated is also very important.  Working in the sun, sweating, or not having enough fluids throughout the day can cause dehydration.  We suggest drinking plenty of water before, during, and after your activities.  However, if you are inclined to have something more than water, sports drinks or protein shakes are acceptable options.  These drinks can help keep you hydrated while providing the energy and electrolytes you need to continue working.

3.  Wearing protective clothing and accessories is also encouraged.  We recommend wearing a hat, gloves, sunglasses, long-sleeved pants, long-sleeved shirts, and closed-toed shoes or boots (At GL365, we love Hunter boots, shop here.  As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases).  These items will help provide additional protection from sun exposure and other elements in your environment.
