DOES IT MATTER IF I BUY CHEAP OR EXPENSIVE LANDSCAPING PRODUCTS?

Does the quality or price of your gardening products, such as tools and outerwear really matter? You may be thinking, no, it’s for gardening, it will get dirty or break, anyway. While that is true, it should not be your basis for deciding on the quality of the products to buy. As the old adage says, “you get what you pay for,” this holds true, even with gardening items. Let’s consider tools first.

Cheaper tools can get the job done, but at what cost? Gardening can wear on your body from some of the strenuous activities and often repetitive movements. So, having support for your body is essential. Cheaper tools usually have a basic design and do not include ergonomic features. Ergonomic designs offer extra support with cushioning and other added protections needed to handle tools easily. These additional benefits aren’t free but are definitely worth the extra cost to ensure comfort and support.

Also, ergonomic tools are more expensive because of the durable materials they’re made from. Better quality tools can help reduce the frequency of replacing broken lower-quality items and the negative impact on your body. Thus, when considering the higher upfront cost, purchasing better quality tools makes sense in the long run.

Outerwear is similar, especially when it’s needed to support or protect your body. Items like footwear should be supportive because prolonged walking, standing, and lifting can be hard on your body. Like tools, these items will cost more but are worth the price for the benefits they offer. It is worthwhile to mention that just because an item is more expensive doesn’t mean it will provide the protection needed. This is especially true with clothing. For example, most boots offer closed-toe protection. But selecting more expensive boots doesn’t mean they will be durable or supportive when gardening. Therefore, careful consideration should be given to ensure appropriate products are chosen.

Of course, what you spend on your outerwear for landscaping projects is a personal preference. Most people will not want to spend a lot on clothing that will get dirty and break down over time. But as mentioned in our post, The Best Clothes to Wear When Gardening, all outwear should be protective and supportive. Whatever you decide, we encourage you to make it comfortable, supportive, and appropriate for the weather and project you’re engaging in.
