Rake

Why:
When you begin gardening, you’ll need a rake. A rake is similar to a broom in that it is used to clean up or move matter. However, a rake is most useful in places where a broom is not, like grass or garden beds. Rakes effectively move leaves, grass clippings, mulch, gravel, or sand.
Types:
Like all tools, there are different types of rakes, and using the right one for the job is necessary. To build your essential tool supply, you’ll want a leaf rake. Leaf rakes are generally lightweight and have flat teeth called tines that curve into an L-shape. The tines are plastic or metal and fan out from a base, which attaches to a long wood or metal handle. Leaf rakes are best used to move leaves, grass clippings, twigs, or smaller branches.
While metal rakes are the most sturdy and durable, we recommend starting with a plastic rake because it has a lighter touch when working in grass and flower beds. Realistically, having both a metal and plastic leaf rake is a good idea because they serve different purposes. The plastic leaf rake is best when handling wet materials or moving matter from your garden bed or grass without disturbing the area. A metal rake is needed when a more durable rake is required, and scratching or digging into the grass or garden bed is not a concern.
