Hand Trowel
WHY:
A gardening hand trowel is a small hand tool used to dig, plant, or move a small amount of matter. A hand trowel is particularly helpful when full-size shovels are too big. They are used to plant small flowers or plants and for digging small holes.
TYPES:
Garden hand trowels are either plastic or metal, have a varying scoop-like shape with a pointed tip, and have a smooth or serrated edge. The scoop on a hand trowel varies in shape, from nearly flat to more round like a scoop shovel. Flatter garden trowels are better for digging and weeding; whereas, rounder shovels are good for transplanting matter or scooping up soil.
But, regardless of the shape of your hand trowel, it will have a pointed tip and either a smooth or serrated edge. Trowels with a serrated edge allow you to cut through small roots, tough turf, or open bags of soil, seeds, or granules. Some hand trowels also have lines for measuring to assist with digging and planting.
Handle styles will also vary. Handles can be without cushioning or padded for comfort, better handling, and grip. At GL365, we love the metal hand trowels with a soft-padded grip and serrated edge as an initial investment. But, no matter what style you choose, investing in quality tools will save you time, money, and effort.
