Snapdragons
Snapdragons seem to be the best-kept secret for winter gardens. We say this because not many winter gardens have these beautiful, dainty little flowers. So, we had to shed some light on this well-kept secret.
Traditionally, snapdragons are considered short-lived tender perennials but have evolved with breeders producing many variations over the years. Snapdragons are native to the western Mediterranean area and are primarily grown as annuals. Its name is derived from the appearance of the flower, which resembles the face or snout of a dragon. When pollinators try to reach the pollen, the flower opens and closes in a snapping motion when squeezed. Snapdragons come in tall and short varieties and are hardier than most people realize.
Snapdragons thrive in cooler temperatures but can survive freezing temperatures also. But to endure colder temperatures, snapdragons must be established in the garden bed and hardened off. Then during cold spells, the plant must remain well-watered, and a layer of mulch is required.
In extremely cold weather, the plant may not continue to bloom flowers. However, the dense, dark green, lance-shaped leaves that spiral around the stem will remain. When spring returns, fertilize with an all-purpose water-soluble solution. This will help continue root and plant growth and encourage the spectacular vibrant flowers to bloom.
