QUESTIONS FROM READERS (March Edition)

QUESTION FROM READER:

I’m interested in buying a few house plants for my new condo, but I’ve never had a plant before. Can you tell me the best indoor plants to buy and which ones are the easiest to care for?

GL365 RESPONSE:

Dear Reader,

Congratulations on your new condo! Having indoor plants will be a wonderful addition to your new space. In our view, most house plants are easy to care for. 🪴😀🪴 But, there are a few that require special care. For the most part though, finding the right light, meeting the plant’s watering needs, using a well-draining potting soil, and occasional fertilization are the basic needs of a house plant. Furthermore, most indoor plants can survive in regular home temperatures between 65 – 85 degrees.

Here are a few of our favorite indoor plants:

A monstera plant in the corner of a room in a bronze pot next to a window with black curtains, a gray couch with a beige decorative pillow, and a brown tv stand with a tv. A steam punk clock is on the wall above the monstera plant.

Monsteras

There are two varieties of monstera plants – deliciosa and adansonii. The difference between the two is the leaves. The deliciosa leaves have leaf holes that are open at the edges. While the adansonii leaves have holes that are completely enclosed.

Our favorite, though, is the monstera deliciosa (pictured above). It loves bright to medium indirect light and requires watering about every 1 to 2 weeks or when the soil is dry. It can survive in normal humidity but prefers humid conditions as it is a tropical plant.

Palms

There are many varieties of palm plants, and all are generally easy to care for. We prefer the look of the Areca, Cascade, Parlor, and Majesty palms because they give your space a beautiful tropical oasis look. These four plants look similar, have common care instructions, but vary in size. Each plant prefers moderate to bright indirect light but can also tolerate shade. Maintaining moist soil and normal to above-average humidity is required.

Ficus aka Rubber Tree

Ficus are another easy to care for tropical plant with beautiful waxy green or purple leaves. Ficus prefer medium to bright indirect light and need to be watered when soil is dry or about every one to two weeks. They can tolerate normal humidity levels and are a hardy fast-growing plant.
