Fall Quick Tip #3

Since spring and fall are the best time to plant, we want to offer a few quick tips on how to choose healthy plants for your garden. Remember, though, no matter how healthy your plants are when you buy them, you must take the appropriate steps to ensure they remain that way. Planting soon after buying is key. But, if your plants are struggling, consider 5 reasons your plants may not be thriving. For now, check out these quick tips to help you choose healthy plants.
Look for:
- compact plants with only a few blooms; more buds are better
- white roots
- a solid root ball with no cracks or damage
- green and shiny foliage
- full and lush plants and foliage with several healthy-looking stems
- the quality of all plants offered at the garden center
Avoid:
- yellow, browning, or wilting foliage
- leggy or long stems
- unusually thin stems or stems with cracks or scars
- plants with gnats or other insects
- signs of disease (i.e., black spots, holes in foliage, etc.)
- root-bound plants (roots growing out of the bottom of the pot or over the edge)
- weeds growing in the pot
