Hand Pruners

WHY
Hand pruners are a type of garden scissors used to cut plants. You may be wondering why you can’t just use regular household scissors. You could. But, using conventional scissors could damage the scissors or the plant. Why? Because regular scissors are not made for cutting plants, stems, and solid branches. However, hand pruners are created for these tasks and are designed for durability and strength. These durable scissors will allow you to cut through hard branches, sometimes a few centimeters thick.
Hand pruners are also known as pruning shears and should not be confused with cutting snips. Cutting snips have a straight blade; whereas, hand pruners have two curved blades. These blades make hand pruners ideal for cutting cleanly through solid branches without damaging the plant. Hand pruners are also used to deadhead plants and cut stems and flowers to keep your plants beautifully shaped and formed.
TYPES
There are two different types of hand pruners: bypass and anvil. You may also hear the term secateur. Both bypass and anvil hand pruners are secateurs, which means pruning shears.
Bypass pruners are the most similar to scissors because they have two curved blades that bypass each other to make a clean cut. Anvil hand pruners have a sharp blade on one side and on the other a flat edge or “anvil.” Anvil pruners operate similar to cutting material with a knife onto a cutting board.
Hand pruners come in either right or left-hand designs and have a variety of sizes and ergonomic styles for anyone needing extra comfort and support. The hand pruners we recommend for your garden tool essentials are the bypass pruners. They are the most versatile in cutting different types of material and making clean cuts to your plants.
