When cold temperatures and snowy conditions are at hand, you must be prepared. Taking the following steps can save your precious plants from a cold spell or winter storm. Review the tips below, and then watch our latest video showing how to protect your plants.
1. Watch the Weather: Staying on top of local weather conditions on weather apps or local news channels is critical. Having knowledge of the approaching weather helps you plan for what’s needed to protect your plants.
2. Take Necessary Precautions: Cover plants with burlap, mesh netting, or other breathable fabric to keep them warm and protected from ice, frost, and snow.

3. Remove Heavy Snow and Ice: After snow or sleet, assess whether enough ice or snow has accumulated on plants to cause damage. Both can be heavy on tree branches, the leaves on shrubs, and flower petals.
4. Remove Covers: Once weather conditions clear and temperatures warm up, remove coverings to prevent plants from overheating or suffocating.
