WHY YOU SHOULD DEADHEAD FLOWERS IN YOUR GARDEN

Summer-2022 – Quick Tip #1

Why is it that some gardens seem to be always in bloom? Would you like this for your garden? Then deadheading is a practice you’ll want to learn.

Deadheading is the simple practice of removing dead flowers from a plant. This encourages more growth throughout the season. But it also offers a few additional benefits:

  • Cleans up the appearance of the plant, making it look tidier.
  • Allows the plant to grow thicker and fuller.
  • Controls the spread of flower seeds.

Plants should be dead head when the flowers begin to fade or when most of the flowers have bloomed. To do so, simply cut the stem ¼ inch above the leaf. This avoids having unsightly stems remaining without flowers or buds.

Deadheading should continue from spring to fall, along with other proper flower care. These steps will provide you with beautiful, lush blooms for an extended period.
