Similar to other seasons, we want to kick off summer flower facts with a classic garden favorite. Black-eyed Susans are a beautiful daisy-like flower commonly seen in yellow with a black, cone-like center. They are one of the most popular wildflowers grown in gardens, blooming from June through September.
Black-eyed Susans typically grow to over 3 feet tall and have coarse, hairy stems. The stems are about one to two feet tall, and the texture helps keep pests away. Atop the stem is a large, single flower about two to three inches wide. The name black-eyed Susan is derived from the brownish-black center of the flower head.
While black-eyed Susans are native to North America, they have become a hardy flower growing across the United States. Previously, black-eyed Susans grew mainly in the central United States, in natural areas along roadsides. But today, these flowers grow in gardens throughout the world.
The different species developed have created annual and perennial varieties, new assorted colors, plants with more longevity, and varying light requirements. But, regardless of the type, these cheerfully bright, showy flowers are fast-growers and a bountiful re-seeder. They easily produce more plants that can be divided and planted in other parts of your garden. 🌻❣️💛
