MUST KNOW TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR PLANTS ALIVE IN HOT WEATHER

Summer-2022 – Quick Tip #2

Hot weather can be brutal on plants if they are not properly cared for. So it’s a good idea to follow the tips below to keep your plants alive during hot conditions. In addition to watering, ensure your plants:

Hot summer sun above clouds. The sky is an orangish-yellow color.
Are installed before weather conditions become too hot.

Some plants need time for their roots to settle into the ground. If they don’t, plants could die if they are not somewhat established.

EASY HACK:  Often it is better to keep a plant in the container it was purchased in until temperatures are cooler. If the container is not decorative, you can simply put the container into a larger decorative pot temporarily and care for it until temperatures cool down. Then when temperatures are more moderate, you can transfer the plant to the desired location.

Too much or hot afternoon sun can scorch a plant. If you find that a plant is in a sunnier location than expected, ensure you water it more frequently to cool it down after hot days.

Drain properly.

Plants need water, whether planted in the ground or in a pot. But, adequate drainage is also required. Plants sitting in water is just as harmful as not having enough water.

Have protection from insects and disease.

Spring, summer, and fall are when bugs are most active. This is also when diseases like black spots and mildew like to appear. Using an insecticide and/or a disease control solution will protect plants against these problems and keep them alive and healthy.
