Warm-Season Grass

Warm-season grasses love hot, humid, sunny climates. With the proper care, they thrive during summer, even in drought-like conditions. Here are the general summer grass tips to keep these grasses happy.

  • Low to medium watering is needed. This means about ½ to 1 inch of water one to two times per week.
  • Cut grass regularly, no more than ⅓ inch off the top of the grass blade each time you mow.

Cool-Season Grass

Cool-season grasses thrive in cooler temperatures but can do well with the proper care in some hotter climates. Follow these general grass care tips to help these grasses survive the summer heat.

  • Medium to high watering is needed. This is about 1 inch of water three times per week.
  • Be watchful because these grasses are highly susceptible to fungus and disease in hot, humid climates.
  • Use a fungicide if fungus or disease strikes. A fungicide should control the problem, but overseeding in the fall will be required for bare spots.
  • Cut grass regularly, no more than ⅓ inch off the top of the grass blade each time you mow.
  • Err on the side of mowing higher during hot summer months to avoid excessive browning or burnout.
