Hedge shears are another must-have tool and are the manual version of electric hedge trimmers. We’ll cover electric hedge trimmers next week. But for now, let’s discuss why you need manual hedge shears.
Hedge shears are simple, smaller, and lighter than most electric hedge trimmers, making them a preferred option for people with smaller yards. Typically, manual hedge shears can cut branches a half-inch in diameter. They are an excellent tool for tidying up stray branches and edges that an electric trimmer may miss. The size of hedge shears also allows for more meticulous work because it is more easily managed. So while electric trimmers may be faster, manual shears give you more precision to shape your trees and shrubs exactly how you want.
But even though hedge shears are simple to use and allow for better-detailed shaping, there are still many factors to consider when buying. The three main areas to consider are as follows:
Blade Design – Hedge shears have different blade designs, straight, wavy, and serrated. But for simplicity, this post covers straight blades since wavy and serrated blades require some professional maintenance. Straight blade materials are made of stainless or high-carbon steel and often have a protective coating to prevent the build-up of sap and other materials. Blade lengths can vary anywhere from 6-12 inches. Longer blades are better for trimming taller shrubs and hedges. While blades between 7-8 inches are the most versatile.
Handles – Handles can be made of fiberglass, plastic, or wood. But can also have ergonomic designs that offer padded grips and shock-absorbers. These features are important because they help avoid hand fatigue, pain, and discomfort from the repetitive movements and strength needed to cut branches. Telescoping is another feature very helpful in reaching taller branches.
Gear technology – An option available that allows more leverage when cutting. This is particularly useful with thicker, harder branches because cutting power increases about 2-3 times that of a basic model.
