THE BENEFITS OF HEALTHY EATING!

Eating healthy helps support an active lifestyle and is essential for proper recovery. We’ve mentioned that taking in enough protein is vital. But there are other nutrients your body also needs to maintain a healthy diet and aid in the recovery process.

Water – Drinking plenty of water prevents dehydration. It also prevents muscles from cramping and provides the necessary nutrients for your body.

Carbohydrates – A key source of energy for your body. Complex carbohydrates (carbs) are best because they have more nutrients and are made up of more fiber and starch than sugar. Complex carbs include fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, and whole grains, like whole-wheat pasta or quinoa. These foods digest more slowly, making them more filling than simple carbs.

Fruits and Vegetables – It’s best to choose fruits and vegetables high in fiber. Fiber is necessary to help reduce cholesterol, avoid constipation and promote lower weight and blood sugar. Fresh apples, bananas, berries, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, and carrots are good choices. You should avoid syrup-based fruits and other canned fruits and vegetables.

You may find that eating healthy is challenging at first since unhealthier options, like processed foods, are more readily available. But with time and deliberate effort, eating healthy can become second nature. Don’t forget to consult your physician or other medical professionals before changing your diet.

With your new food choices, you may need some recipe ideas or help with meal preparation. If so, check out the cooking classes available with Sur La Table to learn a few cooking techniques.
